PVT Wayne Stephen Murphy began his tour of duty on 9/15/70. He was originally part the 1st Battalion, 83rd Artillery until that unit was withdrawn on 7 June, 1971. With less than 3 months remaining on his tour, PVT Murphy was reassigned to another unit. On 25 June, 1971, he and another soldier, SP4 Michael J Whitaker lost their lives when their unit came under heavy artillery, rocket and mortar fire. PVT Murphy just turned 20 years old. SP4 Whitaker was 19 years old.
