CPL Charles McMahon Jr
Today is the 67th anniversary of the birth of Charles McMahon Jr., born May 10th, 1953. CPL McMahon has the unique distinction of being one of two marines to be the last to die in the Vietnam War. CPL McMahon was a Marine Security Guard at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon, South Vietnam. On April 29th, 1975, the compound near the U.S. Embassy came under attack by the Viet Cong. CPL McMahon was killed by a launched rocket.
Within 12 hours of that time the American evacuation of Saigon had begun. On April 30th, 1975, the People’s Republic of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong took control of Saigon officially ending the conflict.
A brave marine, CPL McMahon paid the ultimate sacrifice. He gave his life in service to his country. He is memorialized on the website Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund vvmf.org
